Green Eggs is a recipe sharing app for iOS and Android. It was created to embrace the vast world of cooking and the amazing community that it creates with people around the world. This was a capstone project for my last year of university and we were able to place top at the SCIT Trade Show at the end of the semester.
Originally briefed to be a simple recipe book app, Green Eggs became a vision of a place for cultures from around the world to come together and share their experiences with something that unites all - food.
Our team saw a gap in the market for an app of this type. With the rise of social media, we wanted to create something that that we called the "Instagram for Cooking". There was genuinely nothing out there like it and none that had been executed like the way we designed Green Eggs. Competitor research of recipe apps on the market revealed that we were creating something that the cooking community lacked. While other websites created for recipes, like Taste and Good Food, had a recipe community, we saw that this wasn't being translated on mobile.
We aimed for Green Eggs to be easy-to-use and somewhere people would scroll through like they do with other social media platforms.
During our first brainstorming session, we had so many great ideas for this app roaming from social sharing to live recipe following. However, we needed to understand the scope and the original brief for this project which allowed us to create our MVP- to build a simple recipe book app.
We put a major focus on user experience, placing a focus on minimising repetitive tasks that users would have to go through to create their recipes, such as adding ingredients to organising recipes.
As the Lead UX/UI Designer, I started to design the first prototype in Figma. This prototype was focused on creating the best user experience for recipe building and gave us a good building block during user testing and user interviews.
After conducting testing and a series of user interviews, we prioritised the recipe building process and selected a few main use cases, focusing on optimising the experience for different types of recipes. We addressed a common pain point where users adding ingredients to their recipe found it hard to navigate and find their desired ingredient due to the long list of options. I redesigned the ingredients interface to include a search bar and letter headings that assist the user to search for ingredients more efficiently. Additionally, we began designing the user interface for a basic user dashboard which was designed to scale with our recipe sharing and social media platform goals that we had for Green Eggs.
The outcome is a recipe sharing app, bridging a gap to share home recipes and discover new recipes from cultures around the world.
After delivering our MVP, we incorporated the social features of the app which transcended expectations and became the popular project of the year.
Green Eggs offers an online and offline space for creating and saving our most cherished recipes. This app not only acts as a recipe book but also a social space for users to share information about their own experiences with cooking. As a result, Green Eggs was awarded the SCIT Trade Show 2021 Best Project of the Year.
