Creating the brand

GOATED Sports is a passion project I started in September 2022. The idea came from a random thought I had about old NRL collectibles they used to put into Smith Chips and I wanted to create something that reflected my love for sport and vintage sport player cards.

Using the word "GOAT", which in sports translates to "Greatest Of All Time", a term used to describe the greatest players of their sport - the LeBron James', the Lionel Messi's. With LeBron in mind, his title as the "King" resonated with me so I wanted the logo to have a crown in it.

Charcoal and white - the brand colours of GOATED Sports. I wanted to keep the colours simple with the charcoal portraying feelings of strength, professionalism and respect - all traits of a great athlete.

Designing the first collection

Heavily inspired by the 1989 Hoops Basketball Card Collection, I focused on NBA for this opening collection.

Evolving the product

GOATED Sports really took off during the World Cup in 2022. Messi’s Argentina were making a dream run to win his first ever World Cup to really cement his legacy in football. This is when I made the Messi Jersey Poster - my most successful design. The Messi Poster generated over 200+ sales in its first month of release. 

With the business growing more by week, I made more and more jersey posters for players in the NBA and football and it really expanded the audience we were reaching as it improved our SEO performance dramatically.

Marketing the product on social media

I began creating a marketing plan for my new products, firstly looking into how other related products are promoting on social media. Using competitor research, I was able to determine that video form content was the best performing type for my demographic. This made planning and creating stages of the marketing campaign so much easier, as I had a clear vision and idea of what is going to work. The great thing about video content was that I was able to repurpose it for both Instagram and TikTok, increasing my reach of audience on two platforms via one video. Marketing on TikTok was a major success with several videos reaching near 40K views and over, sparking a massive increase in sales through my store during that time.

38,000+ visits, 600+ orders, $8,000+ in sales

Though the journey only lasted around 6 months, GOATED Sports is a project I look to come back to in the future. I still see high potential in this product and have many ideas to bring to the brand when the time comes.
